Wine Dinner: Edna Valley Cab 2011 & Spaghetti

Dinner- My apartment, Italian Night

Edna Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon
Central Coast, California
2011
12.00

"Edna Valley Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is medium-bodied and classic in style, with ripe dark fruit flavors complemented by hints of dusty vanilla, leather, anise and cocoa powder. This wine has balanced acidity and finishes with fine, firm tannins."

I decided to make myself dinner. This is not common. Actually, this is incredible. I only know how to make one thing, and that's spaghetti. So I boiled water, threw in some spaghetti, heated up a (yes, from the can :( ) a chunky marinara with peppers and onions. The golden ingredient was the hot sausages that I sauteed. I cut them up and put them in the sauce.. big flavor. Let me tell you. I had already bought the Edna Cab specifically to go with the red sauce and the bold flavor of the sausage. I debated for awhile about grabbing a Chianti, but Food Lion's selection was incredibly poor.

Midway through cooking my meal, I realized I couldn't let this moment pass without someone giving me credit for it. That's when I called David. We started out buy tasting the wine, and it had big flavor, but was very smooth, more similar to a merlot than a Cab. It did not disappoint, however. The nose had raspberries and it tasted very balanced. The description claims cocoa and leather, and I could taste those two flavors quite distinctly. Once we tried a sip with the spaghetti, however, the wine mellowed out even more and brought out the spices in the sauce and sausage. It made the dinner seem more whole, if that makes any sense. After a few bites of pasta, when I started to think that it couldn't get any better, I would remember the wine! And then the moment did get better! I didn't even need David's compliments on the meal to feel satisfied. Yes, my ego got a bit bigger after dinner. So did my stomach.
